The GoodWitches partnered with Guardians in order to protect them from vampires? The idea of witches being partnered with someone in order to protect them from a common adversary was too close to my own novel idea to pass up. I liked the premise of the idea.
The Bad
There is, what I feel, an unnecessary love triangle in the book. She's partnered with Jarak as a Guardian, but she's been betrothed to Jarak's brother since birth? That could get messy quickly. I don't understand why Jarak was in the story at all if Ian was the one meant to be with Esmerelda, and I don't understand why Esmerelda just fell in love with Ian after only knowing him a couple of days.
The Review
Esmerelda's relationship with the two boys was verging on annoying - especially since I didn't really like the one she ended up with, however, I think that was more because of how quickly they "fell in love" rather than there being anything really wrong with him. He wasn't a character who was well-developed beforehand as some of the others were. He just kinda appeared and was there.

Wolf Spell Book One M R Polish Books Reviews
Well hell. So many loved this book and I'm not one of them.
Arabeth / Esmerelda is kidnapped when attending her mother's funeral. Held hostage by a man she thought was her mother's doctor, she comes to learn that not only is her mother not dead, but that she herself is a powerful witch and needed to help save her mother's life. At this point, she also learns that her mother is not her real mother, and that along with witches, there are also vampires and guardians...individuals gifted with a spiritual bond to wolves. Struggling to come to terms with her new destiny, she finds herself falling in love with her guardian while tasked with the responsibility of stopping a power hungry warlock intent on taking over the world. But things are more complicated when another guardian shows up and she finds herself torn between two men, and learning that in order to save the world, she'll need to re-unite with her real mother in order to awaken 5 dead witches who are needed to complete a spell that no one has ever attempted before.
Anyone who knows me knows this. I'm just not a fan of love triangles. And I'm still confused by this one. Ian claims to have first rights to Es, and that Jarak is probably better for her, but we never get an explanation for why this is. One second he is rude and kind of a jerk in Es' opinion, then she is falling for him. When you get his point of view, you can't help but start to like him and want him to have happiness, and I definitely understand why her and Jarak had issues...he was too danged wishy washy, and lack of honesty will kill any relationship. I still don't think that whole thing was handled correctly. One minute she is kissing one boy, then in the next, she is kissing the other. And given she didn't tell Jarak that she had an interest in Ian, where I come from that is considered a little too loose and free with your affections. But that was not my only issue with the book. My biggest struggle? None of these characters made me fall in love with them. Reactions were off, or not fully explained. Es learns she was kidnapped and that her parents were not her parents, and yet, she "helps" Meadow, the woman who stole her away from her mother. When she does finally meet her parents you would think there would have been more to that, but no, it was very anti-climactic. I just couldn't connect with them emotionally because they were too busy looking to the next step or attack and not settling anything. There were so many things about these characters that bugged me. I think the story line was good and had great potential, but I spent more time being annoyed with the teen drama surrounding Es (and that is another thing...she was raised with another name and yet let everyone just change it on her....not sure I could easily answer to another name and one as old fashioned as Esmerelda), I'd stop reading for awhile.
As I said above, I think some of the story line needs to be fleshed out to make this a better read, but if you like paranormal YA books, you may want to give it a try. This first book was free.
Ara has lost something precious. As she mourns the loss she finds herself fighting for her life and learning all at once. Every moment is a challenge. She must stay alive and see it through to the end. But is she strong enough? Will she help make things right? Or will jealousy and hate kill her? Find out in this compelling adventure. You will be caught under the spell of this Amazing writer.
Eighteen-year-old Esmerelda thinks she’s just a normal girl, but all of that changes the day of her mom’s funeral, when a warlock, intent on using her special powers, kidnaps her. Powers she didn’t know existed. Thrown in the middle of a magical battle, Es struggles to learn her magic while fleeing both vampires and warlocks, at the same time, hunting for the witches that can help defeat her adversary. The only problem is that they are dead.
Thankfully, she has the help of Jarak—her Guardian—who quickly captures her heart, but she wonders if she can win his? Just when she thinks Jarak is the one for her, Ian appears with daggers drawn to save Es from a vampire attack. Ian is cocky and rude, but there is something magnetic about him—something that attracts her to him. With her heart torn between two men, she faces the foes that are out for her blood. Can Es do the unthinkable and awaken them from their graves before time runs out?
My Review
This is the first book by M.R. Polish and I will tell you that you will NOT be disappointed!! Right from the very beginning I was sucked into the story and couldn’t stop reading. I mean what could you not love when a book has witches, and vampires?? She describes everything and everyone so perfectly that I could picture everything/everyone in the book. I feel in love with Es and her story about learning she’s a witch and has powers. The other characters (Jarak and Ian) were such great additions to the storyline and I cannot wait to see what happens next for all of them ;)
Definitely a must read!
