This book tells two stories simultaneously. The first is about the search to find the ancestry of one man, the mysterious Andrew Fox who first appeared in Culpeper County, VA, in 1772 and then in Greene County, TN, in 1786. That search traces his lineage back to the 1600s.

You will learn some things about crime and punishment in Colonial days, travel by wagons and flatboats, frontier land acquisition, religion, slave ownership and the white man's interactions with Indians.
This book invites you on a journey; come along and travel back to the American frontier. There is something to be learned Andrew and Sarah will teach us about second chances, and the uplifting spiritual gifts of freedom and forgiveness.

I was initially alerted to this book because I am a direct descendant of Andrew Fox. Those who have an interest in genealogy know that family research books can be dry essays on births, marriages, and deaths. The information on Andrew's ancestry is included in the book, backed up with wills, maps, and other documents, but the book is more than genealogy. As I read Tracking Andrew Fox, I was caught up in the story behind Andrew.
The author takes us on a journey to see what it might have been like to walk in Andrew's shoes while traveling as an English prisoner of the 1770s and making his way over water and land to the promise of freedom in Tennessee. We learn how Andrew was affected by the Revolution, Indians, land acquisitions, slavery, and religion of the time. It's a notable slice of American history.
Tracking Andrew Fox is a fine tribute, and Andrew is brought to life with humor and compassion. It is a book to which I will return for insight into an American pioneer's journey to freedom, and I would have enjoyed reading it even if not related.
It was not exactly what I was expecting and I found it boring and really did not finish it all. My husband felt the same.
