4.5-5 starsThis was a great story...I think my favorite of the series so far. I really liked both Gideon and Scarlet and I loved their story.
Scarlet is the daughter of Rhea, the wife of Cronos, the King of the Titans. Unfortunately, Scarlet was the product of Rhea having an affair so both Cronos and Rhea hate Scarlet for something that wasn't her fault. Scarlet was born in Tartarus (prison of the gods) after the Titans were imprisoned and didn't have a good life (especially being imprisoned with Cronos and Rhea). She was also used as a host to the demon of Nightmares and once she escaped Tartarus, she went to Earth and now resides in Budapest, close to the LotU fortress.
Gideon is one of the immortal warriors that were responsible for opening Pandora's box and releasing the demons inside. As a way to imprison the demons and provide punishment for the warriors, the gods decided to make the warriors hosts to the demons. Gideon is host to the demon of lies and experiences great pain and weakness if he tells the truth.
Cronos wants the LotU to hunt down some of the prisoners from Tartarus that have demons in them. They all know that the hunters want to capture any demon inhabited humans and so they're alright with helping Cronos, hopefully getting the new demon host people to help them. Scarlet is in Budapest and so the LotU decide they need to capture her because she's too dangerous to be free so close to their fortress. They capture her but when she's in their dungeons, she communicates through dreams to Gideon. She gets him to come see her and then drops the bomb on him that they were married. Gideon might have thought she was nuts but she reminds him of someone and there's a pull between them that he can't deny. Gideon isn't able to get much more out of her and decides to attempt to win her trust by taking her away from the fortress and spending time with her alone.
Things are interesting because Gideon must tell lies when he speaks. Thankfully, the book itself helps to translate some of the "Gideon speak" and once you get the hang of it, it's kind of fun to keep up with. Gideon is a good guy and he doesn't trust Scarlet at first but there are reasons for it. As the keeper of Lies, Gideon can usually tell when anyone (even gods) are telling the truth or lying. With Scarlet, for some reason, Gideon can't tell if she's telling the truth or not and it makes him leery. That doesn't last very long though and soon Gideon doesn't care about their past, he just wants to be in Scarlet's future. Scarlet isn't so sure though, partially because of their mysterious past and partially because of outside influences that could cause major issues for them both (like Rhea). They do have to get through some tough situations, but Gideon and Scarlet are able to work through things and end the story with a well deserved HEA together.
I greatly enjoyed this story. I liked both Gideon and Scarlet and was pretty much rooting for them from the beginning. I loved how their mysterious past came together and all...that was unexpected but worked well for me. Overall, any complaints are small, I loved the MCs and the story was great and kept me engaged. This is my favorite addition to the series so far. I'd recommend this story and series. :D
* note - I listened to the audio version and the narrator did a very good job.

The only reason I didn't give this book a 5 is because I had a hard time following Gideon and Scarlett's story when we jumped to so many sub plots and side stories. Don't get me wrong...I still LOVE me some Lords but I really would have like to have more of a story on the H and h and not everyone else...let them have their own books.
But now about Gideon and Scarlett...even though Gideon speak is sometimes REALLY hard to follow...I LOVE HIM. The fact that he's willing to feel excruciating pain to tell her his true feelings...sniff sniff...he's such a strong warrior...knowing this would weaken him for hours shows his love for her in a way no one could. And poor Scarlett...hated her whole life!!! And by her own FAMILY!!! I wanted to beat Rhea for her. The B!T@#!
But it all worked out in the end...although it left all the other stories up in air. Next book is Amun and Haidee so lets see how this works.
Still love Gena Showalter and all of the Lords!
Well, I liked this book but it was VERY confusing at times, but that's my fault. This series definitely needs to read in order. So many people to keep up with. Honestly I skimmed a great deal of it only because half the time I was confused as to what the heck was going on. I read book 1 a very long time ago and I plan on reading the series starting over again. This book just looked so interesting that I had to read it. I gave it a 4 because what I did read was fantastic. Many reviews stated that the h was annoying. I have to agree. It didn't make sense that she would give up everything just for sex with H. She HAD to have known this when she gave her wings for him. That whole thing just didn't work for me BUT the book was still great.
They way these books are written is absolutely beautiful. Congrats to Gena Showalter on such an amazing job! I've seen many people complain that the books are hard to follow and hard to keep track of all of the characters but I honestly don't have a problem with that. I thought I would when I started the first book in this series but I've found its really not that hard as long as you start with the first book in the series.
The darkest passion, though, wow! I have officially found my new favorite Lord but it's sort of a tie now between Reyes, Aeron and Strider (can't wait to read his story!) And I love how each book gives a little insight into the other men and the other things going on but it's rare that they ever go back to one's that have already shared their stories which helps to give small glimpses to what will happen in future books!
