Crash Burn Tessa Leoni Lisa Gardner Books

From the very first page of Crash & Burn (Tessa Leoni series), we are drawn into the mind of a woman, tortured by the confused thoughts in her head, as well as bits and pieces of memories. After she catapults over a ravine in her SUV, she manages to climb out of it. She keeps calling out for someone named Vero, as she crawls up the ravine from the crashed car.

Investigators believe she is referring to a missing child and spend hours searching.

Wyatt Foster, a Sheriff's deputy from the small county in New Hampshire, is on the case, along with Todd Reynes, who had been the nighttime duty officer. When they finally realize that the woman was alone in the car, they are even more stymied, as there is obviously a lot to unravel. About the woman, about her husband, and about why the woman is so confused.

Apparently she has sustained three concussions within a short period of time, resulting in Traumatic Brain Injury. They immediately focus suspicion on her husband, identified now as Thomas Frank, while she is Nicole Frank.

Tessa Leoni, who works for a private investigative company, and who we have met in previous novels, is also on the case, but she cannot share what she knows. At least not in the beginning.

As the story continues, a whole series of events begin to create even more havoc, adding further trails that are challenging to follow. Who is Vero? And what is Nicole's connection to her? Who are Thomas and Nicole Frank, since they didn't exist before the past twenty-two years, at least not with those names? Do Vero and Nicole have something to do with a missing child case from thirty years before? How do two burned houses figure into the mix?

As the threads of the mystery begin to come together, and just before they really start to make sense, we are thrust hither and yon, with various and sundry possibilities until we are also pretty confused. In the end, the questions are answered...but what now? Physical evidence and proof are lacking, leaving the investigators with little more than theories and a few facts. Definitely a compelling story that kept this reader turning pages...and giving this one 5 stars.

Crash Burn Tessa Leoni Lisa Gardner Books Reviews

CRASH & BURN by Lisa Gardner was about the most convoluted mess of a book that I have struggled through in a long time. The story line was weird, repetitive and strung out. The only normal people throughout the book was Sergeant Foster and his investigator Kevin, who do their best to initially investigate a DWI . I must say that they caught the case from hell. Nicky Frank, or whatever name she goes by now, her husband and the other characters just are not realistic and just plain weird. The dialogue is tedious, boring and it is not a psychological thriller. It appears that readers either love this book or really dislike what I call nonsensical dialogue. I am sorry I wasted my time on this 386 page manuscript. Lisa Gardner has written some decent books, but this is a low point in her career.
Based on word of mouth mentions from readers I trust, I really wanted to love this book. And I did -- up to a point. The plot and characters are all well-drawn and seem logical but it was the pacing that lost me. If not for the repetition from the victims, from the cops, from the 'supposed' perpetrators, this book could have easily been tighter, more suspenseful, and about 7,000-10,000 words slimmer. The last third of the book gives us what the cops have already surmised but from the victims' point of view, so the material is repeated, and there are no surprises. Reminiscent of Gone Girl, this book left me equally as frustrated. Gardner is a good writer but I think with this plot her characters just ran out of things to say.
Sometimes it's hard to believe that the author began her career with series romances under another name - and not well written, either. Since her rebirth as Lisa Gardner, and her terrific thriller, The Perfect Husband, she has been reliably producing suspenseful books with interesting characters and twisted plots. Crash & Burn seems to be the second in one of her series, though her various series often blend into one another and it can be hard to tell them apart.
Nicky Frank is a singularly unfortunate woman. She's had a series of accidents recently, resulting in traumatic brain injury. Her brain is now playing tricks on her...maybe. Or maybe not. Her latest accident, a car crash, brings her to the attention of the police. High technology isn't the name of the game in New Hampshire, but the police are as hardworking as cops anywhere. The more they probe, the more mysterious Nicky becomes.
Nicky is seeking Vero, a young girl. Or maybe not. The cops take this seriously. Is there a missing girl out in the woods? Or...what?
Then there's Thomas, Nicky's husband. He's incredibly devoted. Or maybe not.
I found one section of the book problematic. It is told in the first person, in italics, and is deliberately vague about the identity of the speaker. The problem, for me, is that it was dropped as a plot device after its early appearance. I felt that, if such a device is to be used effectively, it should have been inserted at intervals throughout the book. This was more like an interruption, not just a red herring.
Other than that, I really enjoyed this story. I did guess one major secret of the book fairly early, and guessed another secret later, but by now I have the author on my Auto-Buy list and I will continue to pre-order her books.
I've been a Lisa Gardner fan for quite some time. However, this is a let down. Too much of the action takes place in the past. Scenes are redundant and go on too long. The detectives break police protocol constantly leaving the reader to wonder if the detectives know civil rights. Too much exposition is done by telling and explaining. There are too many scenes where the detectives talk about their thinking. Too many things happen conveniently in favor of the detectives. Did I say they talk too much in place of action? Telling is a sin in writing. Sorry Am I being redundant?
Where was the editor? If Lisa Gardner has gotten too big for an editor, she might want to rethink her priorities.
