Kris Longknife Undaunted Mike Shepherd Books

Another author bites the dust, taken down by the dreaded "SAD" disease - "Successful Author Delusion". This is where an author who has had many successful books starts believing that any gibberish he puts on paper will not only be accepted, but praised as great writing. Yes, I understand that most readers won't even notice this sudden change, and I guess it's unfortunate (for me) that I DO notice it. I had to stop reading this book at about the 60% mark, and was considering watching daytime soaps in order to experience a more believable story line.

I don't think I've reviewed the previous Kris Longknife books (which I'll have to correct) but I have enjoyed all of them. Of course they are a little far-fetched, but that's expected with classic space opera. What's not expected is the characters we've known for quite some time to suddenly start acting like idiots, and for the author to create situations and plot lines that make absolutely no sense at all.

Spoilers ahead.

We have an enemy that we fought to a standstill over many years of brutal warfare, and finally managed to bargain a peace treaty where "you stay in your yard and we'll stay in ours". Then we learn that the enemy ships have stealth tech that prevents our ships from shooting them. So how the heck did we fight to a standstill and bargain a peace treaty when they have such superior technology that we can't even shoot their space ships?

That same enemy has sent a lone emissary to open communications between our two species after 80 years of "we'll ignore each other" peace, which is actually a very dangerous mission because most folks on both sides don't want peace, and any humans they encounter on their journey to see the human leaders are likely to shoot first and ask questions later. But then we learn that there has been a "back-channel" of communications between the leaders of our two species for the last 80 years, but nobody thought to use that back-channel to re-open these new talks.

Then, our main character's personal computer becomes "sentient" and starts telling jokes instead of answering questions, questions that the captain of the starship needs answered NOW. In addition, the computer nearly causes a new war with another group of humans because it takes over the war ship's weapons and almost shoots down these other human ships. But of course that's OK, because the computer promises not to do it again.

This sentient computer then (without authorization or even notifying it's owner) orders a dozen copies of itself to be manufactured (at great expense) so that all the officers of the ship can have the same (insane) computers tied directly into their brains. They all immediately start having horrible nightmares because the computers don't know how to separate their thoughts from the humans, but hey, that's OK too because the computers agreed not to do it again.

The captain of this war ship knows that some of her crew have built a device to completely bypass any of the security cameras on the ship. But that's OK because they're just using it to have their weekly poker game. After all, who needs security on a war ship? Of course that device is stolen by one of the aliens and nobody knows about it till he uses it to steal a shuttle craft, which of course does not create any kind of alert even though he's fired up the shuttle, opened the bay doors, and headed off towards the planet. The humans only find out because the alien politely knocked somebody in the head and they were found in a corridor (hey, the alien wouldn't want to actually kill a human while trying to re-kindle an inter-species war now would he?). Of course, since it's just a shuttle craft on a war ship, there is no way to remotely control, or even to track it's movements with any accuracy, so we'll have to make a road trip to try and catch the tricky bugger.

There ware many, many, more instances of completely stupid behavior and/or situations that I did not list, but at this point ij the book I gave up on it. I don't think I'll be reading any more Kris Longknife books, as I'm sure the insanity (both human and computer) will continue to escalate and I just can't take it.

Kris Longknife Undaunted Mike Shepherd Books Reviews

The interesting thing about this serries and author is that the centeral character, Kris and the reader are presented with a problem without actually knowing any or all of parameters that must be solved - and when a solution presents itself both Kris and the read discover it together.

In this installment an enemy becomes a friend, a new problem gets thrown into the mess and a new mystery presents itself - enjoy.
This novel introduces us to the Iteeche, specifically Ron, who's been chosen (in more sense than one) to try to get help from the Longknifes. It also shows Kris trying out her diplomatic skills, and disciplining her computer Nellie. Fewer people get mangled by being close to one of those damn Longknifes than before, and there's less action and more talk (much of it delightful) than in past volumes. It also sets up several threads that doubtless will be explored in books to come. The Peterwalds appear only at the beginning, and Vicki is only mentioned but never appears. The best thing is Kris's growth from novel to novel. Here she makes another big mistake . . . and learns from it. Mr. Shepherd is very skillful at contrasting Iteeche civilization with humanity. Good read.
I'm new to the Kris Longknife universe. I've only read this book and Defender. I realize that Defender came after Undaunted, so Mr. Shepard has improved overall in his writing style and skills. While I like the characters, and some moments of the book, some of the typos and errors put me off a bit. Nonetheless, I learned a lot overall reading this book. It was entertaining and I love Scott Grimaldos artwork for the covers. As I said Mr. Shepard gets better with each successive book, and Kris Longknife is a scrappy, lovable character in her own way. Her world and those around her are fun to read about.
It's been two months since anyone tried to kill Lt. / Princess Kris Longknife. She's kept herself busy patrolling the outlying "sooner" colonies for pirates and studying new jump points with her crew of marines and scientists. It's on the way back from one such experimental jump that Kris finds herself face to face with an Iteeche death ball, being chased and fired upon by two Greenfield cruisers. The odd thing in all this craziness? The Iteeche aren't returning fire, and the Greendfield cruisers are missing their mark and hitting Kris' ship, the Wasp. Unwilling to start another crippling war with the seven foot tall, four armed Iteeche, that her great Grandfathers Trouble and Ray fought against, and eventually helped to end hostilities with, 80 years ago, Kris chases off the Greenfields. In short order things go from odd, to inexplicable, when the Death Ball wants to speak to Kris, as an envoy from their leader, to her Grandfather, King Ray, to a plea for galactic safety.

Undaunted is a great installment in the Kris Longknife series. It doesn't have all the run and gun qualities the previous books do, this one gets down to the nuts and bolts of politics, and rips open some battle wounds 80 years covered. Kris takes the Iteeche delegation to see her grandfathers, and you can't help but to admire the two old men. Manipulative and wiley as they are, you know they've lived the life, made the hard calls, and haven't told the whole story to anyone yet.

But of course while they try to figure out what to do about their old enemy's request, they need Kris out of their hair, not pushing the issue for her new Iteeche friend. They send her to a planet on a diplomatic mission. Where Kris may be walking into a blood feud from the Iteeche War. There's an attempt on her life, but only once in this novel.

The strength of Undaunted shows in the supporting cast of Kris' friends, including her computer Nelly, who is developing her personality in interesting ways. At one point in the book, when all hell is breaking loose, Kris is out of commission, and it falls to her team to make sure that things go as well as they can, considering One-of-Those-Damn-Longknives has gotten them into another pickle. Though a frustrating part of the book is the relationship between Jack, her chief of security, and Kris, remains static. It has the same Jack worrying, and Kris looking longingly at Jack while he isn't looking, that the other books have. Just a little step forward would be great in my mind. On the flip side, a very interesting dynamic pops up between the Iteeche representative Ron, and Kris. They become fast friends after realizing that different species does not always mean different problems. It seems as though Kris develops a little crush on Ron, and I hope he continues on as a presence in the next book, to see if this goes anywhere.

The book isn't wall to wall action that you're use to from Longknife novels, but it is solid. It breaks away from the Longknife v Peterwald feud, and opens up the galaxy to aliens and mystery. There's even a shout out to author Jack Campbell that sneaks in at the end. Mike Shepherd has set himself up to go a lot of directions, and I'm excited to see where Kris goes next.
