Strange... I remember the story line, but not whether it was told in first, second or third person. I read this book because of my love of CS Lewis. This is one of the books that he read. It spoke to him spiritually, and he seemed to be quite affected by it. An unusual fantasy, depicting the forces of good and evil. Unusual twists and turns. I love the mystic works of Charles Williams. At 99 cents on , an unbeatable deal.
I love his writing, but his topics or messages are cloudy and confusng. CS Lewis I usually understand, but I wish Charles Williams had brought more Gospel truth into his books, less philosophy and occult. His characters and descriptions of times and places make deep impressions on my mind though, and i can find useful lessons in them.
I read Place of the Lion in college, but I'm sure I didn't understand it all though I thought I did.Decades later, I find it even more entertaining and meaningful. This time I think I understand fairly well, but it's a fairly dense book. Decades from now, I may find that it reveals so many additional layers, I'll decide I don't understand this time.
In The Place of the Lion Williams writes an elaborate Revelations kind of prophecy, blending realism with the supernatural and symbolic. The place of the lion is earth; the lion is both a Form for the supernatural beings medievalists called Intelligences, and the symbol for man, as the lion in the story is a hybrid of both. This is the opposite of what Williams' friend, C.S. Lewis, made of the lion in The Chronicles of Narnia, where it symbolized God. In Williams' book this is the eagle. The eagle is also the Form the protagonist, Anthony, identifies with, if not interchanges with. Other animals represent multiple meanings too, such as the snake is a literal threat to Anthony, as well as a Form, such as Aristotle called it, for the supernatural force to come into our world, and the symbol for Satan or evil.
The mixture of meanings reflects the theme of the other world opening up into, and destroying, this world. Williams portrays the chaos and confusion this could cause, and the various kinds of reactions by characters. The most substantial characters - Anthony, Damaris, his beloved, and his friend Quentin - all have some knowledge of the supernatural world as depicted in literature and the Bible, but they don't necessarily believe it until it impinges on their world. For instance, Damaris studies and writes her thesis on medieval literature, specifically Abelard. She is aware of the religious beliefs of the period, but she does not share them. They are only of academic interest. It is only after an encounter in which Abelard comes alive, and becomes death, that she realizes the truth - that Abelard was real, not just an historical figure or concept.
Williams integrates his interest in philosophy and literature without becoming overbearing or too obscure (a criticism made by friends of other works of his). Christianity is the true account to which the story conforms, but it also incorporates Plato's Ideas, Aristotle's Forms, and the argument between universals and specifics that Abelard became noted for, at least in his own autobiography.
Suppose you were born in a cave, and chained all your life to face one wall where shadows moved; wouldn't you think those shadows were reality?
Then suppose you broke your chains and turned around to see the makers of the shadows. Then you'd think that was reality.
But suppose then you were able to escape from the cave, and make your way into the upper world where you were surrounded by nature and all its creatures; then you'd think that surely this must be the real world.
But supposing it wasn't?
Suppose a few steps higher was where Reality truly began, and from there the Lion, of whom all the lions in our world were mere copies or shadows, suddenly appeared in your neighborhood. What would you do?
Would you submit, and be absorbed by it? Would you spend the rest of your life trying to escape from it? Would you try to exploit its Reality for your own ends? Or would you try to find what was Real in yourself, and face it?
The archetypes or Angelicals such as the Lion., pterodactyl which has a Vuture nature, and a Butterflyh have invaded the English Countryside and must be encouraged to leave. People respond to a particular archetype in accordance with the level of goodness in their nature. i don't understand a lot of what the author says but I found the book compelling.
I have been a fan of Charles Williams for a long time, so was very excited to see him appear in " version". I bought all of the Williams novels available (currently unavailable appear to be _All Hallows' Eve_ and _The Greater Trumps_). However, after purchasing them, I scanned the copies, and discovered that the "Digital Edn / Interactive TOC" versions, which have James Austin as editor, seem to be text which has been scanned in, in such a way as to truncate the right-most word on every single line on every page of the book. It's a bit exasperating. Fortunately, allowed me to return these books for a refund. At least I have my hardcopies, but I'll look forward to when kindle has better versions of these books available.
